Chapter 7

Bu the time Mallory arrived at the appointed meeting place, the Daughters were already assembled. All except Sasha. Mallory walked over to Hannah, determined to ask about the missing librarian. But before she could even open her mouth to ask, Hannah parted her inky black lips and spoke first. Sasha is missing. No shit. Yeah, matt mentioned as much to me. You’ve been talking to matt? Is that a problem? Mallory said hotly as he slipped the black rob Hannah handed her over her head. Hannah gave her a hard look. You’d be wise to keep your distance from Matthew?. Why? Well when Sasha does resurface, she is going to be pissed to find out that you guys have grown close. Mallory furrowed her brows. I would hardly say that matt and I have grown close. That’s not what I heard. And still, after all this time, you would just listen to whispers instead of coming to me to talk about it? I would say that I am hurt, but it would be a lie. Hannah rolled her black-rimmed eyes. Stop being so damn sensitive. I’m just trying to look out for you. Well, I can assure you. I’ve been spending much more time with Andrew than I have Matthew. The other Daughters began to form the circle. Andrew? Asked Hannah, her eyes narrowed. Who is Andrew? Mallory grabbed Hannah’s hand and went to join the circle. Tall. Blonde, muscular. Used to be on the track and field team with L- Mallory snapped her lips shut. Hannah’s face had gone slack. Even though Mallory hadn’t finished her sentence, the Irishman’s presence hung in the air around them. Hannah gently tugged her hand from Malory’s and went to the opposite side of the circle, as far as she could get away from Mallory. Mallory joined hands with Jen and Sara, two girls she hardly knew. Jen gave her a hand a tense squeeze in reassurance, and Sarah ignored her completely. Mallory blinked quickly. Her tears were stupid, and she knew it. There should be no ill will between her and the Daughters, not after this winter. But there also wasn’t any love here. Not really. She felt slightly more accepted, now that she was included in their numbers. But she didn’t feel particular close to anyone. A figure with her hood pulled up steeped into the circle then. Bianca LaRue. Even though Mallory couldn’t see the girl’s face, the tell-tale purple curls peeking out of the hood betrayed the sense of anonymity Mallory imagined the older girl was going for. Bianca broke the circle and went to stand in the center. How Bianca had weaseled her way back to the head of the Daughters, Mallory could not imagine. But the dark-skinned girl had the other Daughters enthralled; everyone seemed pleased to have Bianca back, and knowing that she and Lugh had dueled on campus only seemed to lend the newcomer credibility. As if Bianca had known the entire time that Lugh was up to nefarious things.
